Should You Build Your Own System?
As a former landman myself, I can understand why many companies are tempted to build a system of their own capable of doing what TotaLand does. That is, after all, how I got started. I began playing around with building Access databases to generate and track leases in the late 1990's while still working as a landman. As someone with first-hand experience in this area, I can shed some light on the cost effectiveness and practicality of building and maintaining a system of your own.
Security – TotaLand is SSAE 16 compliant, which means that data on TotaLand is far safer than on virtually all home and business networks. Even if you were to forego the formalities of an actual SSAE 16 audit, implementing the physical, network and personnel security policies involved costs far more than a TotaLand license.
Reliability – The safest system in the world is useless if your people can't use it. In order to guarantee that your people won't be twiddling their thumbs when the heat is on, you absolutely must have hardware, power, communication and data redundancy.
Development – Great ideas don’t happen by themselves and great developers don’t come cheap. What’s more, without a development team, your organization is potentially at the mercy of the whims of a single individual.
Intangibles – Even if you were able to overcome all of the above issues, there is still the fact that companies who hire brokerages are not going to want to learn and use a separate system for each brokerage they deal with. The future is in the third-party systems like TotaLand that allow each user to see all that he or she is allowed to see with only one User ID and one system to learn.
And last but not least…
